About Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath
An owner-run kitchen and bath remodeler for Sherman Oaks and the south Valley. Who we are, and how a job runs.
Who Is Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath?
Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath remodels kitchens and bathrooms in houses and condos around Sherman Oaks, CA. If you're checking us out before you call, here's the plain version. The company is run by John Bissett, who spent years doing full construction builds around Los Angeles before he narrowed it down to kitchens and baths.
On the big builds, a lot of John's time went to permit offices, not job sites. Plans went back and forth, projects stretched on for a year or more, and the owners waited the whole time. In between, some clients just wanted a kitchen or a bathroom redone. Those jobs moved. A room could go from tired to finished in weeks, and the change was big enough that people would stand in the doorway and laugh. That's the work he decided to keep.
It also made sense to him. The kitchen and the bathroom are the two rooms you use every single day, more than any other part of the house. If those two feel right, the whole house feels better. John likes getting them right.
What he kept hearing from homeowners was the same few complaints. The remodeler priced the job from the doorway. The cabinets showed up before the drain was fixed. Tile went onto a wall nobody checked for moisture. The price moved twice, and nobody called back. Valley Oak is set up to fix those, one by one.
The houses make that worse here. The Census Bureau counts 76% of homes in ZIP 91423 as built before 1980, which puts a lot of kitchens and baths past 40 years old. Rooms that age hide galvanized pipe, cast-iron drains and old wiring. Pricing them without looking is a guess, and a $27,143 midrange bath, per the 2025 Cost vs Value report, is too much money to guess at. The same report has that bath recouping 89.6% at resale.
Valley Oak is the same trade run in a different order. First a visit: measure, open things, look. Then the scope goes on paper, trade by trade, with a price. Then a schedule that has the plumber, electrician, tile setter and inspector each showing up when the room is ready for them.
That's slower on day one and faster everywhere after. Some calls end early because of it. A kitchen that needs new doors and a fan, not a gut, gets told so, even though it's the smaller job.
The work is kitchens, baths and the floors and walls around them, in houses and condos. Additions, ADUs, roofing, pools and painting are not on the list. Browse the full service list to see what is.

Who Does the Work at Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath
A remodel takes several trades. No one person does the plumbing, the wiring, the tile and the countertop templating. Some of the work is done by our own people, and some by independent, licensed local providers brought in for their trade.
The provider who does a given piece of work is responsible for its licensing, insurance and workmanship. Scheduling stays with us, and so does the phone. Each stage gets checked against the written scope before an inspector or you see it. Want to know who's coming on which day? Ask, and it goes on the schedule.
How a Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath Job Runs
- 01
A look inside before a price
On the design visit we open the cabinet under the sink, check the shutoffs and press the floor beside the tub. A soft spot or a green-stained pipe changes the job, so those get found on day 1, not day 10.
- 02
The scope goes on paper
Demo, plumbing, wiring, cabinets, counters, tile, fixtures and paint each get a line and a price. A task that isn't on the page isn't in the price.
- 03
Permits and inspections on the calendar
The permit gets pulled when the job needs one, and inspection is called before anything is covered. Civil Code 1101.4 can also require swapping old toilets and faucets, so that gets checked early.
- 04
A walk-through at the end
You and John go room by room together. Whatever you aren't happy with is written down, with a date for fixing it.
License and Insurance at Valley Oak Kitchen and Bath
A remodeler should be able to show you a license and proof of insurance without being asked twice. Ask for our license and insurance certificate on the visit. You can also look up any California contractor's license with the state, and we suggest doing that for every bid you collect, ours included.
This page stays general on purpose. A number printed here is one you can't check, so it's left off. The cost page shows where our price figures come from, and each one links to its source.
Where we work
We work in Sherman Oaks and nearby, including Studio City, Encino and Woodland Hills, plus Van Nuys, Tarzana, North Hollywood, Valley Village, Toluca Lake and Beverly Glen. The neighborhoods page has the full list and the housing age for each ZIP.
About the Company
Who will I deal with from the first call?
John is your point person. That's the one who looks at your room, writes the scope and answers when you call with a question on day 6. Other trades come in for their part of the work, but you shouldn't have to work out who to ask. When something changes mid-job, you hear it from John first.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Both. Some work is done by our own people, and some by independent, licensed local providers who do that trade for a living. Whoever does a piece of work is responsible for its licensing, insurance and workmanship. Scheduling is ours, and each stage gets checked against the written scope before it is covered.
Will you take a small kitchen or bath job?
Yes, if it's work inside a kitchen or bath. A vanity swap, new cabinet doors or a better fan are real jobs, and sometimes the right ones. A smaller job that fits beats a gut that doesn't. Call or send photos, and you'll hear which size you have, even if it's the one that earns us less.
